Trail directions

From the clock tower in Hardegg, a path leads to the left into the fringes of Hardegg. Once there, cross the bridge over the Fugnitz, then turn sharp right into a dead-end street where the actual hiking trail begins. A narrow trail now leads steeply uphill and takes you directly to the legendary Reginafelsen. This offers a wonderful view of both the town area and castle, plus the surrounding densely wooded slopes.

The trail continues through an oak and hornbeam forest to the Maxplateau, where - for orientation - there is also an ORF transmitter. Characterised by dryness and heat-loving plants, the plateau offers the best view of Hardegg. The town and castle are virtually at the hiker's feet.

You can get back to town via an easily accessible forest road or via the steep Christbaumsteig trail which branches directly off the Maxplateau. At the old bathing area, the path and trail meet up again and lead to the town's small main square. From there, you can either continue to the Thayabrücke and take the path behind the inn back to the tour starting point or choose the variant via the Hochzeitstiege (Wedding Staircase) and the cemetery, and take a look at the Guckkastenmuseum. Those who want to leave the latter option open should not forget to ask for the door code for the museum at the National Park House before starting off on the hike.

Paths steeped in history
  • According to legend, a young, recalcitrant woman was bricked up in the walls below the Reginafelsen and then haunted the Hardegg cemetery for a long time as the "Black Woman”.
