National Park Centre

National Park Centre Thayatal-Podyjí

Since its opening in summer 2003 the National Park Centre near Hardegg developed into the main central facility for visitors in the national park. About 25,000 guests enjoy the services offered here by the national park. It is a striking and prominent construction and yet, it fits harmoniously into the landscape of the Waldviertel.

Wood and glass

Its construction was made possible thanks to funds from the fitness programme of the Region of Lower Austria with added financing from the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRD), subsidies from the Ministry of Environment as well as contributions from the municipality of Hardegg.

The modern low rise building made of wood and glass is located at the edge of the National Park approx. 1.5 km outside Hardegg, towards Retz. It is constructed on platforms so that the forest ground underneath remains open, and flora and fauna can continue to develop freely.

The interior rooms stand out with their brightness and transparency and offer a unique view on the surrounding landscape. It was built following ecological standards, using mainly environmentally friendly materials, heating with wood pellets and producing electricity through a photo-voltaic installation.
