The City of Retz
Information for visitors | Excursions
The city of Retz was founded by the counts of Hardegg at the end of the 13th century.
The well preserved city walls with corner tower and the town gates give a clear idea of the original configuration of the town. In the 16th century, wine trade and viticulture brought the citizens of Retz unexpected prosperity. Retz has the largest historical wine cellar in Austria. The superb renaissance buildings on the wide main square also testify to the town's former bloom. The graffito house, the town hall, the Dominican abbey and the windmill are particularly worth seeing.
